The Correct Way to Bottle Feed
The other day while I was at the park with my kids, I watched a mother upend a bottle of baby formula into her baby’s mouth, as he lay flat on his back wiggling, or maybe writhing in discomfort. Why aren’t people educated on the proper way to bottle feed an infant? Turning a bottle upside down is like force feeding. They are just gulping away without stopping for breath, not having a...

The Joy of My Little Boy
I’ve been doing a lot of talking…yapping, lately, about having a three-year old. I’ve been lamenting to people about how challenging it is and how I just “don’t know what to do with him”. Well today I discovered exactly what I need to do. I need to just BE with him. Today, inspired by a friend who spoke the other day of making this a practice with her daughter,...

Caffeine Experiment still going...
No changes so far in Gia’s sleep but it will take a couple weeks for both of us to get it out of our systems. I’ve felt irritable all day. I hope this works. I’m cutting chocolate completely out too because I read that breastfed babies don’t react well to the theobromine in chocolate!
Here is to sleep in my future!
forevermysong22 asked: do you still breastfeed your baby? how old would you tell a person to go too/?

Breastpresso?
Few things give me more pleasure than to open my bag of beans in the morning and pour them carefully into my grinder, taking a deep inhalation of the wonderful rich smell. I’m a serious coffee drinker, and have never given real consideration to cutting it out because I love it so much I don’t really care if it isn’t the best thing in the world for me. Sure, I’d probably be...

I'm not ready to wean (myself)
I am still not ready to wean my daughter from her numerous nighttime feedings, despite knowing how much she needs the sleep and feeling how much I need it. For one, I am a bit frightened of her temper, which has been revealing itself more and more in the days since her first birthday. My sense is she is going to put up a good fight and it’s going to be very hard for me. Harder than it was...

Bottle Feeding with Love. →
Having planned to breastfeed, I didn’t have much knowledge about bottle feeding, and a lot of what I did find didn’t seem helpful or a good fit for my parenting style. Ultimately, we acted on much of the advice given to breastfeeding moms together with a good dose of instinct.
I’ve been wanting to pass on some of what we’ve learned for awhile as a resource for those who may have found...

Happy Birthday Baby Girl
A year ago today, my husband I were picking at our Valentine’s dinner and talking about how we both felt off. About an hour later the off feeling turned into contractions, and a few hours after that, we were at the hospital, getting ready to meet our daughter. I can’t believe it has been a whole year. Although I feel like Gia has been with me forever, it also feels like just yesterday...

birthisbeautiful asked: I was wondering if you had any advice on how to feed a child with tongue tie? My firstborn had it quite severely and nobody offered to snip it, even though it was diagnosed and evidently interfering with her ability to get a deep enough latch. As a result she lost tons of weight and became severely dehydrated. I have another baby due in may, and apparently they are still not snipping tongue...

Mama Tea: Social Breastfeeding in Action- Meet The... →
This is a great introduction to the Milk Truck, thanks mama tea!
mamateablog:
Jill Miller, an artist from Pittsburgh, has combined an art project, activism and humour and come up with The Milk Truck. The first thing you see is a giant boob on the roof of the truck but once you delve a bit deeper into the reasoning behind it you realize the giant boob is just the start of…

Go ahead and formula feed. The world is ending...
A Chinese biotech company has begun using cloning technology to introduce human genes into the DNA of dairy cows, in an effort to produce a more “nutritious” and “beneficial” milk. The man behind the research says this is the answer to the problems humans have traditionally had digesting cow’s milk. This modified bovine milk contains lysozome, lactoferrin and...
p-sychedelicheart asked: Your blog has given me all the info I need to make a choice to breastfeed with my second baby. With my first I was in high school and it was highly frowned upon to go pump in and between classes so I gave up. Thank you!

Breastfeeding as a Flight Attendant
On a recent flight home from celebrating the holidays with family, I spoke to a flight attendant (we’ll call her Laura) about breastfeeding and working for the airlines. I had been curious what their policies were with regard to breastfeeding employees. Apparently, breastfeeding while working actively as a flight attendant is next to impossible. Laura told me that she breastfed her baby...

Macro Milk - Formula Alternative
I met a mom the other day who told me about this recipe for macrobiotic baby formula. Interesting!

That Sucks. Literally.
Last night I ran into our neighbor who’s wife just gave birth two days ago to their second child. I asked how breastfeeding was going, knowing that she breastfed their daughter until she was eighteen months, and he said it was going well but that “he’s not getting enough, he just keeps sucking and sucking and not getting satisfied.” Luckily, he didn’t seem worried. A...

If you let your baby scream until she turns blue,...
There, I said it. I am probably going to lose friends over this one but guess what, it’s my opinion. If you can’t express your opinion in a blog then where the hell can you express it. My dear friend, supporter and mentor encouraged me to give this post that title after I texted that to her. I am an adult and certainly I am entitled to feel strongly, very strongly, about whatever I...

The Skinny on Infant Growth Charts
I have known for awhile that the infant growth charts used by pediatricians were “based on formula-fed babies” (I was told by my lactation consultant after my first child was born). What I did NOT know until the other day when I was at my daughter’s ten month check-up is that formula companies actually MAKE the charts! I was looking at my daughter’s weight gain with our...
